NAES has provided maintenance and construction assistance to the Cowlitz Falls Hydro Plant since 2006. Our project has had some unique problems which required initiative solutions. NAES has provided the expertise and experience to tackle emergency repairs. One such project included the modification of a sluiceway bulkhead gate into a roller-type to be able to close under flow conditions. NAES as part of team helped to the successful closure of the plant’s sluiceway. NAES has assisted in the replacement of a worn turbine shaft packing sleeve. This work required precise in-place machining and special heat-treated welding. NAES has provided a cost-effective way of completing uncommon repairs that plant personnel have not experienced during normal operation. Due to the excellent quality of work, Cowlitz Falls has continued to the use of NAES for maintenance services. We plan on lifting and repairing the turbine operating ring to replace the bottom were pad with NAES again providing the labor and the expertise to complete the work. NAES takes a collaborative approach in completing the work task at hand and always been a pleasure to work with.

Performing a scheduled outage 2 weeks before Christmas is difficult enough with keeping everyone focused on the task at hand. While performing a closing key inspection on the compressor, we found significant damage to our compressor blades and diaphragms. One phone call to NAES Turbine Services Division for technical assistance/oversight brought a response onsite within 24 hours. This was instrumental in helping the plant get throught the forced outage with as little impact and delay as possible through the holiday and new year. This was a very positive experience using NAES support on very short notice and during a difficult time of year.

The Yelm turbine overhaul on unit 1 and 3 corrected many long standing issues on these 1930 and 1950s vintage units. The units were nearing end of life mechanically and were due some very extensive work. NAES started from the ground up and reverse engineered many components along the way, NAES even had to compensate for building shifts while adding high-lift systems and redesigning the lube oil system on unit 1. NAES coordinated with dozens of vendors and suppliers and was able to find a solution to every challenge that came up. Upon the return of unit 3, the efficiency and capacity gains were immediately used to minimize lost generation during the completion of unit 1. Both units are running very well today and I kid you not when I say it was a complete mechanical rebuild, even the bolts were replaced inside these 2 units. Thanks for a job well done, safe and on budget.
